Genesis & Establishment of Sylhet Agricultural University :

Officially the Sylhet Agricultural University has started its formal function on 2nd November, 2006 following issuance of a notification by the Government as per requirement of the “Sylhet Agricultural University Act 2006” which was passed in the National Parliament on 3rd October 2006. In fact, the faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science has come into being through the up gradation of Sylhet Government Veterinary College (SGVC). The SGVC was established in 1995 and had been functioning as “School of Life Sciences” under ShahJalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet Bangladesh.

Sylhet Government Veterinary College, now Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science has so far produced nearly 400 graduates. Graduates of this University have been playing a vital role in the development of Livestock production, up gradation, treatment, agricultural sub-system, and agro-based economy. They are involved in various national and international services ranging from civil service to RVFC (Remount Veterinary and Farm Core). Presently about 1200 undergraduate and 50 internship students are enrolled in this University.

The main task of the university is to tone up the quality and standard of higher agricultural education and to produce first rate agriculturists, agricultural scientists and technologists for shouldering the responsibilities of agricultural development of the country. To achieve the objectives over 90 percent of the recurring budget and the entire development fund come from the government through University Grants Commission (UGC).

The University started functioning with only 9 teaching departments grouped under 1 Faculty, namely, the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science, having a total of 44 teachers and 350 students only. The Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Fisheries & Faculty of Agricultural Economics & Business Studies was added after the establishment of the University. At present the numbers of teachers are 84 under 4 faculties. Among them 20 are in study leave for higher study in country and abroad.

Message From VC

First of all, it is my great pleasure to welcome all the admitted students to Sylhet Agricultural University campus. Sylhet is known as a spiritual city that bears the sweet memories of the great saints of Islam Hazrat Shahjalal and Shah Poran. As an agro based motherland, the contribution of agricultural scientists play a vital role for the betterment of our farmers. Farmers are the backbone of our rural economy. I strongly believe that the students will gain proper knowledge on different aspects of agricultural sciences for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh, and I sincerely believe they will be able to play important role for changing the fortune of farmers as a future agriculturist.
Being a newly born university, Sylhet Agricultural University has so many limitations like shortage of teachers, officers, administration staffs, transport, accommodation etc. But despite of having so many limitations, I strongly hope & believe that our new comers in Sylhet Agricultural University have great deal with a great challenge for learning and doing in this versatile agro based university.
Lastly, I wish their best of luck and hope their best carrier by building up their moral characters & gaining adequate knowledge to make Bangladesh sufficient in all sectors of agricultural sciences. I also wish their pleasant and comportable stay during their study period in this university.
