Genesis & Establishment of Sylhet Agricultural University : |

Officially the Sylhet Agricultural University has started its formal function on 2nd November, 2006 following issuance of a notification by the Government as per requirement of the “Sylhet Agricultural University Act 2006” which was passed in the National Parliament on 3rd October 2006. In fact, the faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science has come into being through the up gradation of Sylhet Government Veterinary College (SGVC). The SGVC was established in 1995 and had been functioning as “School of Life Sciences” under ShahJalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet Bangladesh.
Sylhet Government Veterinary College, now Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science has so far produced nearly 400 graduates. Graduates of this University have been playing a vital role in the development of Livestock production, up gradation, treatment, agricultural sub-system, and agro-based economy. They are involved in various national and international services ranging from civil service to RVFC (Remount Veterinary and Farm Core). Presently about 1200 undergraduate and 50 internship students are enrolled in this University.
The main task of the university is to tone up the quality and standard of higher agricultural education and to produce first rate agriculturists, agricultural scientists and technologists for shouldering the responsibilities of agricultural development of the country. To achieve the objectives over 90 percent of the recurring budget and the entire development fund come from the government through University Grants Commission (UGC). |

The University started functioning with only 9 teaching departments grouped under 1 Faculty, namely, the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science, having a total of 44 teachers and 350 students only. The Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Fisheries & Faculty of Agricultural Economics & Business Studies was added after the establishment of the University. At present the numbers of teachers are 84 under 4 faculties. Among them 20 are in study leave for higher study in country and abroad. |
